Since 2006 hundreds of students at schools and community colleges in East Sussex have been selected for these awards. Each work in the resulting exhibition at the Farleys Gallery is reviewed by Antony Penrose and Ian Chance in front of an enthusiastic audience of teachers, students and their friends and families. Following that event the exhibition is on public view.
The Awards are presented in a number of categories: painting; sculpture/mixed media; textiles; photography; works on paper; sketch books; and two works demonstrating the values of Surrealism are chosen for display throughout the following year in Farleys House.
This is an outstanding opportunity for the students to receive wider comment on, and appreciation of, their work and to show it in a professional context in a public gallery. Exhibiting students are presented with a certificate and those judged to be outstanding in each category receive a Farley Arts Trust Award prize of art materials or equipment for their school or college. These prizes are funded by grants from trusts and sponsorship from companies and other organisations. Past supporters are listed below.
Every state school and community college in the county is invited to participate. The next Farley Arts Trust Awards will take place in 2017 and we will be in touch with the Heads of Art Departments in the 2017 Spring term. The Awards will be presented at the exhibition at Farleys House in October of that year.
